How to Set Up Google Business Profile in South Africa

If you only do one marketing thing this year, make it this. A Google Business Profile is free, takes about twenty minutes, and it is the single biggest reason one plumber in Bellville gets ten calls a week while the one down the road gets none.

When somebody searches "electrician near me" or "attorney in Sandton", Google shows a map with three businesses above every other result. That block is called the Map Pack, and being in it is worth more than any paid ad. Here is exactly how to get there.

Step 1: Create the profile

Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account you will still control in five years — not an employee's personal Gmail. Enter your exact business name. Do not stuff keywords into it: "Mike's Plumbing Cape Town Best Prices" will get you suspended. Just "Mike's Plumbing".

Step 2: Choose the right category (this decides everything)

Your primary category is the strongest ranking signal you control. Be specific. "Plumber" beats "Contractor". "Family Law Attorney" beats "Legal Services". You can add up to nine secondary categories — use them, but your primary one should describe the single thing you most want to be called about.

The most common mistake we see: businesses pick a vague category like "Business-to-Business Service" and then wonder why they never appear. If your category doesn't match what people type, you don't exist.

Step 3: Service area vs shopfront

If customers come to you (salon, restaurant, shop), enter your street address and it will show on the map. If you travel to customers (plumber, electrician, builder), hide the address and set service areas instead — list the suburbs you actually cover. Adding fifty suburbs you never visit weakens all of them.

Step 4: Verification

Google will verify by postcard, phone, email or video. In South Africa the postcard can take two to three weeks and sometimes never arrives. If you are offered video verification, take it — you walk around filming your premises, signage, tools and equipment, and it is usually approved within days.

Step 5: Fill in every single field

Step 6: Reviews are the ranking multiplier

Reviews are the difference between position four and position one. Ask every satisfied customer, the same day the job finishes, with a direct link. Reply to all of them — good and bad. A calm, professional reply to a bad review sells better than a wall of five stars, because it shows how you behave when something goes wrong. There's a full playbook in how to get more Google reviews.

Step 7: Post regularly

Google Posts appear on your profile and signal that the business is alive. One a fortnight is plenty — a finished job, a seasonal offer, a useful tip. Businesses that post consistently hold the Map Pack far longer than ones that set it up and forget it.

What this looks like when it works

A complete, verified, reviewed profile linked to a fast mobile-friendly website is the entire local SEO game for most South African small businesses. Not blogging every day. Not paying an agency R8,000 a month. This.

The profile gets you found. The website closes the deal. If yours doesn't, read why your website gets no enquiries.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free in South Africa?

Yes, completely free. Google never charges for a Business Profile listing. If someone phones claiming you must pay Google to stay listed or to 'renew' your listing, it is a scam — this is one of the most common small business scams in South Africa.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take in South Africa?

Video verification is usually approved within a few days. Postcard verification typically takes two to three weeks in South Africa and sometimes fails entirely. If you are offered video or phone verification, choose it over the postcard.

Can I have a Google Business Profile without a physical shop?

Yes. Choose 'service area business', hide your street address, and list the suburbs or towns you serve. This is the correct setup for plumbers, electricians, builders, mobile beauticians and any business that travels to the customer.

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?

The usual causes are: the profile is not verified, the primary category is too vague, the address or service area is wrong, or there are duplicate listings competing with each other. Distance from the searcher also matters — you will rank strongest in your own suburb.
