Turning a Website Visitor Into a WhatsApp Conversation

A contact form is a request to wait. Someone types their details into a box, presses send, and hopes a stranger replies. Meanwhile the same person will message a business on WhatsApp without a second thought, because messaging is where they already live.

Across much of the world — Europe, Latin America, India, Africa, the Middle East — messaging is simply the default way people contact a business. Moving your enquiries there is usually the single highest-return change you can make to a website.

Pre-fill the message. Always.

The hardest part of sending a message to a business is the first sentence. A click-to-chat link can write it for them:

"Hi, I saw your website and I'd like a quote for a bathroom renovation."

The visitor arrives in the chat with the message already typed, cursor blinking, one tap from sending. Compare that with an empty box and a blinking cursor and nothing to say. The pre-filled version converts dramatically better, and it costs one line of code.

Make the pre-fill page-specific. A visitor on your roofing page should arrive with a roofing message, not a generic one. It tells you what they want before they say a word, and it makes the whole thing feel deliberate rather than automated.

Where the button belongs

The mistakes that waste it

Nobody is watching the phone

A messaging button implies speed. If replies take two days, it is worse than a form — a form at least sets the expectation of waiting. Decide who watches it before you add it.

Using a personal number with no business profile

A business profile gives you a name, a description, hours and a catalogue. A bare mobile number gives your customer a stranger's digits and a shrug.

Only offering messaging

Some people want to phone. Some want email. Some want a form because they are at a desk. Lead with messaging; keep the others available.

Losing the conversation

Messages are easy to answer and easy to forget. Once a conversation turns into a real enquiry, get it somewhere it will be followed up — a note, a CRM, anything that is not a chat thread scrolling out of view.

What good looks like

Visitor lands, reads for thirty seconds, taps a floating button, and a message about the exact service they were reading about is already written. They send it. You reply in minutes. That entire path is a day's work to build, and it is what our sites ship with by default — from R2,500, once-off.

Frequently asked questions

Why use WhatsApp instead of a contact form?

A form asks the visitor to submit details and wait. Messaging is instant, familiar and lower effort, and in much of the world it is already how people contact businesses — so it converts a larger share of interested visitors.

What is a pre-filled WhatsApp message?

A click-to-chat link that opens the app with the first message already written, so the visitor only has to press send. It removes the hardest part of starting a conversation and noticeably increases enquiries.

Where should the chat button go on a website?

Floating in the bottom-right corner on every page, repeated inside your main call to action, and again at the end of long pages so an engaged reader does not have to scroll back up.
